"We cannot simply create larger quantities of waste and dump it into the environment and pretend that it doesn't matter."
Al Gore, Earth in the Balance.

The U.S. is the #1 trash-producing country in the world, at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world's people generate 40% of the world's waste.

Recycling reduces carbon emissions, greenhouse gases, landfill waste and waste disposal costs.

Recycling and the Climate Crisis

The manufacture, distribution and use of products - including the management of waste - all result in greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling reduces greenhouse gases by reducing methane emissions, saving energy and increasing forest carbon sequestration.

  • Decomposing waste in landfills produces methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

  • Incinerating waste produces carbon dioxide.

  • Transporting waste to disposal sites produces greenhouse gas emissions from the combustion of the fuel used in the equipment.

  • Manufacturing new products requires more energy and natural resources than "re-making" products by recycling.

Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfil space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings and 60 pounds less of air pollution.
