30 Years Of Recycling Experience
Drew Sones
Regarded by many as the "father of recycling" in the City of Los Angeles,
Drew Sones led the team that designed and implemented residential curbside recycling in the nation's
second-largest city.
For over 20 years, Drew managed all aspects of Los Angeles' integrated solid
waste management programs including the operation of a 4,000-tons-per-day landfill, closure of five
inactive landfills, converting two of them into active recreational sites for soccer, Little League
and high school baseball fields and family picnic areas. The curbside recycling program served over
760,000 residential customers with 1,000 employees, over 700 collection vehicles and an annual budget
of $140 million.
Drew was responsible for compliance with AB 939 (the California state recycling
mandate), which was exceeded by nearly 9% in the year 2000. Under Drew's leadership, all major
developments within the City of Los Angeles (such as Staples Center and Playa Vista) submitted waste
management and recycling plans prior to beginning construction.
Drew Sones is a recognized leader in solid waste management both locally and
nationally. He brings outstanding executive leadership skills and recycling and solid waste expertise
to Recycling Strategies.
